Project: Welcome To Opus City
the goal: Welcome To Opus City is one of the largest projects I've worked on. The goal was to create a driving game to go along with the Stick To School site, that pulled from the same career exploration database, and would help teach students about different jobs that could be gotten with a high school diploma.
The result was Welcome To Opus City, a massive driving/adventure game where the player has to roam the city and help different people in over 400 jobs! The city has six main districs, each devoted to a specific type of career path. (i.e. realistic, social, enterprising, etc.)
One of the main developmental features of this game is an entirely XML based storyline system. Dialogue and game text, as well as whole missions and rewards, can be changed just by editing a text file. I ended up writing an entire interpreter in ActionScript 3 to handle the storyline code. This was the beginning of a project I'm now working on called the Storybook Engine which will be a set of ActionScript classes to help develop games/simulations with a lot of text.
responsibilities: Full storyline/mission system development and integration as well as other significant development features of the game including game saving, data handling, and inventory architecture.
tech used: flash, AS3 (ActionScript 3.0), php, amfphp (for remoting), mySQL
